How to Check if an Email Address Is Valid
Learn the technical checks used to assess whether an email address is valid without relying on format alone.
An address can look perfectly normal and still be unable to receive email. Checking whether an email address is valid therefore requires more than a visual inspection.
1. Check the syntax
The address must follow a valid structure, with a local part, an @ symbol and a usable domain. Syntax checks catch common formatting errors but cannot confirm that the mailbox exists.
2. Check the domain
The domain should resolve correctly and be configured to receive email. MX records identify the servers responsible for accepting mail for that domain.
3. Evaluate mail-server responses
SMTP-level verification can provide additional evidence about whether the destination accepts the address. Some servers intentionally hide this information, so the result can be uncertain even when the address is real.
4. Detect special address types
Disposable addresses, role-based mailboxes and catch-all domains may require different treatment depending on your use case. They are not all automatically invalid, but they can carry different risks for a campaign.
5. Use the result in context
Verification is a technical quality signal. Combine it with consent, engagement history and your own sending policy before deciding who should receive a campaign.
